A message from our Magnet Coordinator, Kristen Biscoe:
I’ve been a teacher in Baltimore County Public Schools for 15 years. Prior to my current
position as Magnet Coordinator, I was a special education teacher at the middle and high school levels.
At Sollers Point I oversee the recruitment, application and assessment process of magnet
programs. In this capacity, I visit area middle schools and conduct informational presentations
about the ten programs we offer at Sollers Point. I also inform students and parents about how
transportation, scheduling and programs work at Sollers as we offer a unique half-day schedule
to our students. As magnet coordinator, I also liaison with area elementary schools to coordinate
and arrange visits to Sollers Point.
I design and organize the Sollers Point Technical High School Open House, and the presentation
at Baltimore County’s Magnet Expo each year. These events are designed specifically to
showcase the programs we offer at Sollers with the idea of recruitment in mind.
Once students are accepted into Sollers, I am the contact person for all things magnet-related. I
organize mailings and parent contacts, I assist with the New Student Orientation. In addition,
with regard to the Superintendent’s Rule 5140, and Rule 6400, I monitor student performance,
attendance and conduct as part of the support system to promote student achievement. The
school counseling office and I work together on the enrollment, withdraw and dismissal process
when necessary.
Finally, I design, compose and publish a monthly newsletter celebrating the successes and
highlighting our school’s programs and distinctive student and teacher achievements, school
events, magnet news and photos of these achievements. In this newsletter, I gather teacher input,
student feedback and endeavor to be responsive to what students would like to read about and
see in the school’s newsletter.
