This course is designed for students with basic PC usage skills. It introduces the architecture, structure, functions, components, and models of the Internet and other computer networks. The principles and structure of IP addressing, and the fundamentals of Ethernet concepts, media, and operations are introduced to provide a foundation for the curriculum. This course provides students with hands-on classroom and laboratory work in current and emerging networking technology that emphasizes practical experience. The career-oriented approach to learning networking empowers students to enter employment or further their education and training in the computer-networking field.
Also, instruction and training are provided in the proper care, maintenance, and use of networking software, tools, and equipment.

This course provides students with practical classroom and laboratory experience in current and emerging networking technology. It describes the architecture, components, and operations of routers and switches in a small network. This course emphasizes practical applications and a hands-on approach to learning networking in terms of implementation and career opportunities. Students will configure and troubleshoot routers and switches and resolve common issues with RIPv2, EIGRP, single-area OSPF, virtual LANs, and inter-VLAN routing in both 1Pv4 and 1Pv6 networks. Particular emphasis is given to the use of decision-making and problem-solving techniques in applying science, mathematics, communication, and social studies concepts to solve networking problems. In addition, instruction and training are provided in the proper care, maintenance, and use of networking software, tools, and equipment and all local, state, and federal safety, building, and environmental codes and regulations.

In Cyber Security Essentials, students start by exploring the broad topic of cybersecurity in a way that matters to them. They learn how to protect their personal data and privacy online and in social media and learn why more and more IT jobs require cybersecurity awareness and understanding. From there, they develop foundational understanding of cybersecurity and how it relates to information and network security. Students are introduced to the characteristics of cyber-crime, security principles, technologies, and procedures to defend networks. Through interactive, multimedia content, lab activities, and multi-industry case studies, students build technical and professional skills to pursue careers in cybersecurity.

Network Security prepares students to design, implement, and support security for networked devices. The course builds on CCNA 1 and CCNA2 and prepares students for Cisco Security certification. Students may prepare to pass the CompTia Security+ exam.

Mr. Sigmon has worked as both a middle school and high school Social Studies teacher, a Staff Development teacher here at Sollers and is now teaching the IT Networking program. He has had a constant interest in Information Technology and received his A+, Network+ and Security+ certifications in 2012 while teaching. His time at Sollers inspired him to pursue teaching Networking and Cybersecurity to students to help prepare this generation in a much-needed field with many great job opportunities and great pay. He loves watching the students learn when they set up networks in the lab on the racks and then put command line in and watch the configurations happen!
