Allied Health Level I (grade 10) Level I students learn Allied Health via the state of the art computer program, Health Center 21. Students work at their own pace and receive immediate feedback as they complete the lesson. They complete units on health care systems, infection control and medical terminology. In the skills lab, students learn about personal protective equipment and universal precautions. They research an infection of interest and explain its relevancy to the "chain of infection." |
Typical Course Sequence:
Grade 10: Allied Health I, Anatomy and Physiology
Grade 11: Allied Health II, Introduction to Health Careers, Medical Terminology
Grade 12: Parallel enrollment CCBC, Internship, or Industry Employment

Anatomy & Physiology (grade 10) Allied Health students will be equipped with a working knowledge of the body's systems, including the major organs for each system and their functions, in order to better understand and care for patients who are experiencing a disruption in normal system functioning, or who need assistance in maintaining maximum health in various body system functions. Additionally, students will gain an appreciation of the interactions of biological and chemical processes that contribute to A&P, and the interrelatedness of the functioning of the various body systems. |
Allied Health Level II (grade 11) In the Fall of grade 11, Level II students begin their clinical rotations at Johns Hopkins Bayview. Students earn clinical hours toward the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Certification. Small groups do hands-on care on the 6th floor surgical unit and at the Plaza floor in the geriatrics center. Students will also shadow professionals in clinical areas such as the cardiac catheterization lab, the nursery, phlebotomy, and the chemo clinic. These students also earn college credits with CCBC Essex in two courses, "Introduction to Health Careers" and "Medical Terminology." Certified professionals in many health professions provide lectures on their chosen careers. Each student completes an in-depth research project including interviews, visuals, and presentation of material on a health career of interest. |
Mentoring:
During Allied Health II, ten students are afforded the opportunity to work with a mentor at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center to explore areas of interest. The mentors and students meet on a monthly basis to discuss goals, career choices, and visit clinical areas of interest. |
